San Diego Padres Call Up Former WVU Pitcher Ryan Bergert from Triple A

The San Diego Padres called up former WVU right-handed pitcher Ryan Bergert from Triple-A El Paso on Friday.

Bergert is slated to join the Padres’ bullpen when they host the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night. The Canton, Ohio native was the opening-day starting pitcher for the El Paso Chihuahuas. He is 0-1 with a 5.16 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 22.2 innings.

Bergert was a 2021 sixth-round pick by the Padres and has logged 340.2 innings over five minor league seasons, recording 380 strikeouts and posting a 4.33 ERA. San Diego also called up Jackson Wolf, another former WVU pitcher in 2023, who was drafted in 2021.

Bergert is rated as San Diego’s 21st-best prospect. He went 4-1 with a 2.30 ERA and struck out 68 batters over 58.2 innings pitched.

Bergert will become the 30th former Mountaineer to play in the big leagues and joins Victor Scott II of the St. Louis Cardinals as a former WVU player on an active MLB roster. Alek Manoah of the Toronto Blue Jays and John Myers of the Cleveland Guardians are on the injured list.
