WVU Outslugs BYU, Takes Series

PROVO, Utah –The West Virginia University baseball team rallied to beat BYU 19-16 on Saturday afternoon at Miller Park.

Kyle West had four hits and three RBI for the Mountaineers (22-4, 4-3 Big 12). Jace Rinehart drove in a team-high six RBI. Grant Hussey, Chase Swain and Rinehart each had three hits.

Luke Anderson led the Cougars (14-11, 4-5) with four hits and five RBI.

Armani Guzman gave WVU a 3-0 lead in the second with a three-run bomb to center field.

In the third inning, Logan Sauve’s solo home run gave the Mountaineers a 4-0 lead. Then back-to-back doubles from Hussey and Gavin Kelly drove in two more runs. Guzman’s base hit pushed the lead to 7-0.

However, BYU scored five runs in the bottom half to cut the deficit to 7-5.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars scored 10 runs and led 15-7.

Despite blowing a seven-run lead, WVU didn’t back down and a six-run fifth inning cut the deficit to 15-13.

In the seventh, the Mountaineers regained the lead on a three-run blas to right field from Rinehart.

WVU wasn’t done there and added three more runs in the eighth.

In the ninth, BYU tried to spoil the win for the Mountaineers. Jack Kartsonas loaded the bases and with one out, Steve Sabins called on reliever Chase Meyer. Meyer forced Easton Jones to ground out, allowing one run to score. Then he struck out Parker Goff to end the game.

The Mountaineers face Ohio State on Tuesday at Bill Davis Stadium in Columbus. First pitch is at 6 p.m. (ET).
