WVU Pitcher Recognized by Big 12

by: Justin Walker

Per a release from the Big 12 Conference, West Virginia Mountaineer pitcher, Griffin Kirn was named Co-Pitcher of the Week by the conference.

“Kirn tossed 8.0 innings against Queens (N.C.), allowing only one unearned run. The senior left-handed pitcher struck out 10 without walking a single batter, as he retired 14 consecutive hitters. He threw 72 strikes in 96 pitches through 8.0 innings, the longest outing by a Big 12 pitcher this season.”

Kirn shared the honor with Oklahoma State’s Harrison Bodendorf, who “led the Cowboys to their first win over a top-ranked team since February of 2022 at the Astros Foundation College Classic in Houston. The junior lefty hurled five shutout innings against then-No. 1 Texas A&M and tied a season-high in strikeouts with seven while allowing only one hit and one walk. It is his third consecutive win to open the season with the Cowboys after transferring from Hawaii.”

WVU baseball now sits at 12-0 on the season after sweeping a three-game series with Queens (N.C.). They are off to one of the best starts in program history in their first year under new Head Coach, Steve Sabins.
