According to sources, after the 11-9 loss to Kentucky on Saturday, it was noted that West Virginia, the 16th overall seed and regional host will be using Dawson Montesa on Sunday and if the Mountaineers win they would be using a “surplus” of pitchers at 5 pm against Kentucky.
Montesa transferred to WVU this offseason from DII Adelphi.
Montesa went 8-1 with a 1.99 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 105 strikeouts with just 24 walks over 72 innings with Adelphi last season.
However, that has not transitioned very well to WVU. Or at least not yet.
He has showed sparks of excellence, but as of late he has struggled on the mound which has resulted to him losing his Friday rotational role to the then being moved to the weekend rotation to being used out of the bullpen.
Montesa has worked 63.2 innings this year with 78 strikeouts and 35 walks and has allowed 44 runs on 60 hits over that span of time. He is 3-5 with a 5.94 ERA.
WVU is hoping to get seven strong innings from Montesa, but he’s only done that three times this year with his last time being back in April against Texas Tech. Since then he has only went four innings or less over a span of seven outings.
First pitch between WVU and Wake Forest is scheduled for noon and will be televised on ESPN2.
