The 16th seeded West Virginia Mountaineers routed its way to a regional opening victory on Friday night with a 10-1 win over Binghamton.
The win now marks the second consecutive time under Steve Sabins that the Mountaineers have reached the 40-win mark.
West Virginia advances to the winners bracket where they will face Kentucky.
West Virginia and Kentucky will meet in the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the past four years.
Binghamton falls into the losers bracket and will face Wake Forest.
The winner of the WVU-UK will move into what is called the regional championship bracket. If Binghamton or Wake win on Saturday, they will then be forced to play another elimination game against either WVU or UK.
Today’s game between WVU and UK has a lot of implications. The winners next opponent has to beat them two-to-three times in a row to advance to the Super Regionals. The loser of WVU and UK will then play with its back against the wall as they’d have to win-out to make it to the Super Regionals.
