WVU Football Adds Canadian Pass Rusher

WVU football coach Rich Rodriguez is apparently not done adding players from the transfer portal.

Earlier today, it was reported by 3 Down Nation that University of Albany defensive lineman Emerson Joy would be transferring to WVU.

The 6-foot-6, 240-pound defender had a breakout year with the Golden Bears in 2025. He recorded 20 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery in eight regular-season games.

In his first season at Alberta, the Calgary native had eight tackles and one pass defended. He appeared in all eight games his freshman season.

Joy’s coach at Alberta, Stevenson Bone, seemed to hint that Joy may have NFL level talent.

The U of A is proud to have had Emerson play with us in the 2024 and 2025 season. I’m happy to have coached him as he is an excellent player and extremely motivated, intelligent young man. We wish him well in his future endeavours,” Bone told 3DownNation.

We’re proud of our track record of putting players into the CFL and NFL, Bone continued. “While it’s sad that we won’t have Emerson next season, that does not change our goal in continuing to produce pro talent.”
