MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Chansen Cole pitched a complete game gem as No. 18 West Virginia defeated Kansas State 9-1 on Saturday afternoon at Kendrick Family Ballpark.
Cole (8-1) dominated on the mound, striking out nine and allowing just one run on five hits for the Mountaineers (30-12, 15-8 Big 12).
Armani Guzman had three hits and two RBIs. Gavin Kelly and Sean Smith each hit home runs.
Lincoln Sheffield (6-2) suffered the loss for the Wildcats (26-21, 9-14). He gave up six runs on 10 hits.
In the third, Kelly hit a solo shot to right field. A Kansas State error paved the way for two additional runs when Guzman hit a triple to give WVU a 3-0 lead.
The Mountaineers tacked on two more runs in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Matt Ineich and another Wildcats miscue.
Brodie Kresser tripled to left field, extending WVU’s lead to 6-0.
In the sixth, Micah Kendrick homered to cut the deficit to 6-1, but Smith’s three-run blast in the bottom of the inning pushed the lead to eight.
Cole closed out the ninth for the complete-game performance.
The Mountaineers will go for the sweep on Sunday with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
