MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – No. 13 West Virginia couldn’t generate any offense in a 5-0 loss to No. 23 UCF in Friday night’s series opener at Kendrick Family Ballpark.
The Mountaineers (20-6, 7-3 Big 12) mustered just three hits on the evening. Armani Guzman, Gavin Kelly and Paul Schoenfeld each had a hit.
Dawson Montessa (3-4) suffered the loss, surrendering three runs on five hits through four innings while striking out seven.
Max Murray (3-1) earned the win for the Knights (19-8, 9-1), giving up one hit and striking out four.
UCF took a 1-0 lead in the second when DeAmez Ross singled to center field, scoring Javier Crespo. In the third, Andrew Williamson extended the Knights’ lead to 2-0 when he blasted his seventh home run of the season.
UCF tacked on additional runs in the fourth and fifth before Williamson hit another solo shot in the seventh.
WVU made some noise in the sixth when Kelly reached on a single and Sean Smith was hit by a pitch, but the Knights went to Kris Sosnowski and the senior managed to escape the threat with back-to-back outs.
The Mountaineers will look to even the series on Saturday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
