OPINION – Ross Hodge Deserves Patience from WVU Basketball Fans

Morgantown, WV – Yesterday, the West Virginia University Men’s Basketball program scored a monumental comeback victory against the UCF Knights in Orlando. After falling behind double digits, the Mountaineers utilized a massive late-run to strengthen their resume for the NCAA Tournament. Now, sitting at 16-9 overall and 7-5 in the Big 12, WVU controls their own destiny going into March.

While it has been anything but a smooth ride during the 2025-26 season, Coach Ross Hodge has made the most of a tough situation. With a program on their 4th different head coach in 4 years, and experiencing yet another massive roster overhaul, anyone would have struggled to find their footing. However, after taking a few lumps early, it appears the Mountaineers have finally found their identity under Hodge.

It has been a common debate among fans on if Hodge is the right man for the job. Blown leads and a struggling offense decreased the overall morale of the fanbase. Though concerns were certainly warranted, yesterday proved one thing – Ross Hodge deserves your patience.

Yes, Hodge came to Morgantown with limited experience. The Big 12 is also a massive step up from North Texas. But one thing is for sure; Hodge is proving he is built for this level of competition.

The verdict is still out on if the Mountaineers will make March Madness in 2026. For the WVU Men’s Basketball team to be in that position, however, is an impressive feat for Hodge. Things could have turned sour very quickly, but the Texas native has helped the program overcome obstacles again and again.

Despite title aspirations likely being null and void this season, Hodge will turn the Mountaineers into competitors sooner rather than later.

Athletic director Wren Baker made the right hire.
