Important Decision Looms for Rich Rodriguez and WVU Football

Who Will Be Behind Center to Open the 2025 Season

by: Brandon McKinney

The 2025 WVU football season brings many unknowns, with a completely new staff and an overload of new players. But there is one position battle that sticks out from the rest. Head Coach Rich Rodriguez will have to evaluate and make tough decisions throughout the spring, but the hardest decision is who will be the starting quarterback for the Mountaineers this upcoming season.

The Mountaineers return junior quarterback, Nicco Marchiol. They also added two transfers at the position in Texas A&M’s Jaylen Henderson and Charlotte transfer Max Brown. Redshirt freshman Khalil Wilkins and highly recruited true freshman Scotty Fox are also part of the Mountaineer quarterback room.

When asked about the quarterbacks during a recent post-spring practice press conference, Rodriguez said, “(They) have gotten better each day” and he also stated, “I like the room, they’re all really conscientious and have gotten better and there is some really good competition in that room. Legit, it’s not just make up competition. The veterans we have, if you wanna call it that, have been around a little bit in Nicco and Jaylen have done a really good job.” Rodriguez also praised freshman Scotty Fox, saying, “I’ve been really impressed with Scotty Fox, he has a great future.”

Rodriguez and his staff have plenty of options when it comes to quarterback for the 2025 season and beyond. While we are months out from hearing who the starter will be, fans will speculate for the next 173 days. They will be eager to see which quarterback ushers in the new Rich Rod Era at WVU. The Mountaineers will open the 2025 season against Robert Morris in Morgantown on August 30.
