There are several questions heading into the football season for West Virginia this season and one of those is who’s going to be the number one and number two receivers for the Mountaineers offense.
And then the other question is what will be Rodney Gallagher’s full role within the WVU offense.
I do believe Cam Vaughn will earn the official number one receiver role while Jaden Bray earns the number two spot. As for Gallagher, I see him being a slot man and the go to number three receiver in the offensive regime this season.
Vaughn will likely get more of the reception yards this season from any other WVU wide out, however I don’t think he will lead the way in receiving touchdowns. I do however see him bringing in eight touchdowns this season and will have 900 yards receiving, which would be 97 more than he had last season at Jacksonville State.
Bray, who is my protected number two receiver, will haul the most touchdowns through the air for WVU this season and my projection is he brings in around 10-12 touchdown catches this season with his best game against Robert Morris.
Gallagher will get most of the short yardage, 5-10 yard receptions, but don’t be surprised to see him targeted down the field for 15-25 yard receptions as well. He will bring in four touchdowns this season, but will set up the WVU offense for more flexibility both on the ground and through the air.
Expect Vaughn, Bray and Gallagher to all have independent impacts this season for WVU and to each throw in different scenarios that will make it hard for opposing defenses to really focus on one of them this season.
Predictions:
Vaughn: 55 receptions, 8 TD, 900 yards
Bray: 48 receptions, 11 TD, 855 yards
Gallagher: 38 receptions, 4 TD, 425 yards
