WVU Football Faces Uphill Battle in Big 12, Again Projected to Finish Last in Preseason Poll

As we inch closer to the start of the 2025 college football season, another preseason Big 12 poll has sparked widespread discussion.

The poll, shared by CBS Sports’ Bud Elliot, ranks Utah as the surprising No. 1 team despite a challenging 2024 season. However, one reoccurring theme stands out: the West Virginia Mountaineers continue to languish towards the bottom of the standings, ranked No. 16 in the 16-team league.

To those who’ve paid attention to the preseason prognosticators, the ranking shouldn’t come as a surprise. Last month, Kelley Ford gave West Virginia just a mere 2.9 projected Big 12 wins. Meanwhile, college football analyst Phil Steele placed the Mountaineers at the bottom of the conference in his annual preseason analysis.

The uncertainty surrounding the Mountaineers comes as no surprise, as head coach Rich Rodriguez has 72 new players on the roster, with only a couple starters from last season returning.
