WVU Defeats UCF in Series Opener

ORLANDO, Fla.–Despite only registering one hit, the West Virginia University baseball team defeated UCF 4-1 on Friday night at John Euliano Park.

Kyle West had the Mountaineers’ lone hit.

Reese Bassinger (5-0) picked up the win and Carson Estridge earned his fourth save for WVU.

The Mountaineers (35-5, 14-3 Big 12) used four pitchers, Griffin Kirn, Bassinger, Chase Meyer and Estridge to hold the Knights (23-17, 6-13) to one run on nine hits.

In the top of the fifth, WVU took a 1-0 lead when Grant Hussey scored when Spencer Barnett flied out.

UCF tied the game in the bottom of the frame, DeAmez Ross tied the game with a base hit to center field.

Brodie Kresser gave the Mountaineers a 2-1 advantage when his sacrifice fly scored Armani Guzman.

In the eighth, WVU tacked on two runs. Sam White’s sacrifice fly scored Chase Swain. Then Jace Rinehart’s groundout plated Skylar King.

In the bottom of the inning, Meyer ran into some trouble when he gave up back-to-back base hits and walked Boedicker to load the bases with no outs. The right-hander then struck out the next two batters and forced a ground out to end the inning.

In the ninth, Meyer walked the first batter and Estridge hit the first batter he faced before striking out the next batter and forcing a double play to end the game.

The Mountaineers and Knights meet for the second game on Saturday at 6 p.m. (ET).
