HOUSTON, Texas–Jack Kartsonas pitched seven scoreless innings in his first start of the season as the West Virginia University baseball team defeated Houston 11-4 on Sunday afternoon at Schroeder Park, sweeping the weekend series.
Kartsonas gave up just two hits and struck out five, earning his third win of the season.
Logan Sauve had two hits and drove in four runs for the Mountaineers (30-4. 9-3 Big 12). Both of the catcher’s hits were home runs.
The Cougars (19-17, 5-10) scored four runs on just three hits.
Kyle West’s two-run blast in the first inning gave WVU a 2-0 lead.
In the third, West scored on Sam White’s ground out.
Sauve’s first home run came in the fourth when he blasted the ball over the left field wall, giving the Mountaineers a 5-0 lead.
Sauve capped off a four-run eighth with his second home run of the day, a 394-foot bomb, putting WVU up 9-0.
In the bottom half of the inning, Houston finally got on the scoreboard. However, the Mountaineers responded with a two-run ninth.
The Cougars made some noise in the bottom of the frame, scoring three runs but Tyler Hutson struck out Kenneth Jimenez to end the game.
WVU travels to Huntington on Tuesday to square off against Marshall. First pitch is at 6 p.m. (ET).
