Mountaineers Beat Utah in First Game of Doubleheader

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.–Brodie Kresser had three hits and four RBI as the West Virginia University baseball team defeated Utah 6-4 in the first game of a double header on Saturday afternoon at Kendrick Family Ballpark.

Jace Rinehart and Chase Swain each had two hits for the Mountaineers (26-4, 6-3 Big 12).

Van Kempem pitched 4.1 innings, surrendering four runs on four hits. Reese Bassinger pitched the final 4.2 innings and earned the win. He gave up just no runs on four hits.

The Utes (13-15, 2-9) scored four runs on seven hits.

For the second consecutive game, Utah jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. However, WVU responded when Rinehart drove in Kresser in the bottom of the frame.

In the second, the Mountaineers took a 4-1 advantage with a three-run blast from Kresser.

Both the Utes and Mountaineers added runs in the fourth and Utah cut the deficit to 5-4 in the fifth when Cameron Gurney plated two.

Gavin Kelly’s sacrifice fly gave WVU a 6-4 lead after seven.

With one out and a runner on first, Armani Guzman made a running catch over the fence in foul territory for the second out and Bassinger got the final batter to ground out to end the game.

The Mountaineers and Utah play the second game of the doubleheader after a short break.
