MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – No. 17 West Virginia defeated in-state foe Marshall 12-2 on Wednesday night at Kendrick Family Ballpark.
Gavin Kelly had three hits and two RBIs for the Mountaineers (22-7). Matthew Graveline, Matt Ineich, and Armani Guzman each had two hits.
Ian Korn (2-0) earned the win while Kenyon Colins (2-3) suffered the loss for the Thundering Herd (14-17). Korn pitched three scoreless innings and had two strikeouts.
Ineich singled and stole second on a wild pitch before Kelly knocked him home with a single through the left side. After Sean Smith’s double, Guzman’s sacrifice bunt plated Paul Schoenfeld from third. Smith scored when Guzman was caught stealing, giving WVU a 3-0 advantage in the first.
In the top of the second, Marshall picked up a run to cut the deficit to 3-1. In the bottom of the frame, the Mountaineers added on two runs.
WVU extended its lead to 8-2 in the sixth. Matthew Graveline came home on a wild pitch before Smith doubled to right-center, scoring two more runs.
Brock Wills singled through the right side, scoring Guzman in the seventh. Tyrus Hall’s groundout gave the Mountaineers a 10-2 edge.
In the eighth, WVU made it 11-2 on Guzman’s RBI groundout. Zahir Barjam then delivered a base hit to trigger the 10-run rule and end the game.
The Mountaineers travel to Lubbock, Texas for a three-game series against Texas Tech starting on Friday.
