Yehl Dominates as WVU Finishes Sweep of BYU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Behind a dominant start from Maxx Yehl, No. 20 West Virginia rolled past BYU 11-1 on Sunday afternoon at Kendrick Family Ballpark to complete the season sweep.

Yehl (4-0) pitched seven innings and allowed one run on five hits while striking out 11.

Sean Smith had two hits and scored three runs, including a home run for the Mountaineers (16-4).

Brock Wills and Gavin Kelly each had two hits.

Nate Gray (2-5) suffered the loss for the Cougars (10-12). He gave up four runs on five hits through three innings.

In the fourth, the Mountaineers put up a four-spot. Tyrus Hall singled up the middle, scoring Matthew Graveline. On a double-steal, Armani Guzman swiped home and a few pitches later Tyrus Hall did the same. Brock Wills’ base hit up the middle made it 4-0.

Guzman’s sacrifice fly in the fifth extended WVU’s lead to 5-0.

Crew McChesney cut the Cougars’ deficit to 5-1 on a solo shot in the sixth.

Smith hit a solo home run to left field in the sixth before the Mountaineers added two more runs in the seventh on a two-run single from Kelly.

Reese Bassinger pitched a 1-2-3 eighth before WVU scored three runs in the bottom of the frame, ending the game via the mercy rule.

The Mountaineers play Tuesday at Marshall at 6 p.m.
