WVU’s Offensive Surge Powers Mountaineers Past Baylor

WACO, Texas – West Virginia’s offense exploded on Saturday afternoon, lifting the Mountaineers to a 13-2 rout of Baylor at Baylor Ballpark.

Brock Wills went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Paul Schoenfeld had three hits and four RBIs for WVU (12-4). Nine different Mountaineers recorded hits on the afternoon.

Cole Chansen (3-0) picked up the win, tossing six innings and giving up two runs on three hits.

Grayson Murry (0-1) suffered the loss for the Bears (11-7).

WVU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Schoenfeld drove in two runs with a double to left-center, and Wills added another RBI with a double of his own. Both players added runs in the second inning, and Brodie Kresser’s single down the right-field line extended the Mountaineers’ lead to 6-0.

In the fourth inning, WVU tacked on another run but Baylor cut the deficit to 7-2 in the bottom of the frame when Tyce Armstrong blasted his seventh home run of the season.

The Mountaineers responded in the fifth when Sean Smith’s single to center field pushed the lead to 9-2.

The scoring continued in the sixth when Tyrus Hall’s base hit plated Armani Guzman and Hall scored on Matt Ineich’s double down the left field line. Schoenfeld’s triple extended WVU’s lead to 12-3. The Mountaineers tacked on one more run in the seventh and Bryant Yoak closed out the bottom of the inning with a perfect frame, ending the game early due to the run rule.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday for the rubber match of the series.
