The West Virginia football program has added a promising talent to its 2026 recruiting class, securing the commitment of three-star cornerback Makhi Boone from St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio.
Boone, a 6-foot-0, 175-pound defensive back rated 86 by 247Sports, had been pledged to Miami of Ohio since the spring, even taking an official visit to the Redhawks during the summer.
However, his standout senior season—where he recorded five interceptions, eight pass breakups, and two sacks—caught the attention of several programs, including WVU. The Mountaineers wasted no time, contacting Boone earlier this week and inviting him for an official visit over the weekend.
Arriving in Morgantown on Saturday, Boone witnessed WVU’s thrilling 29-22 victory over the Colorado Buffaloes, a game that showcased the electric atmosphere at Milan Puskar Stadium. The experience proved pivotal, as Boone announced his decommitment from Miami of Ohio and his commitment to the Mountaineers shortly after leaving campus.
Boone plans to enroll in January. He becomes the 28th commitment and eighth defensive back in WVU’s 2026 class.
After careful consideration and talks with my family and coaches I have decided to decommit from Miami of Ohio. I will Be continuing my football career as a mountaineer 💙💛 @CoachRodWest @RealCoachRod @coachjacobroser @RasheedMarshall @CoachZAlley @SEHS_FOOTBALL @alston_darrius… pic.twitter.com/QfBYhwlbbg
