College football fans waited anxiously for the first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2025 season. Big 12 fans were waiting to see just how bad the conference would get disrespected in the initial rankings. Turns out, that was not the case.
Not only did the Big 12 get a team in the top 12 on Tuesday night, they got two. They also had a team at number 13. So, technically, the Big 12 has a chance to get three teams into the College Football Playoff.
The CFP Committee ranked BYU at number seven. Just behind the undefeated Cougars at number eight were the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Joey McGuire’s squad has only one loss on the season. It came to Arizona State. The Utah Utes came in at number 13 with only two losses so far on the year. Those losses came at the hands of the two teams mentioned above.
BYU and Texas Tech play one another in week 11, so one is likely to drop in next week’s rankings. However, it’s good news for the conference to see the committee thinking this highly of the league and its teams.
As expected, the SEC and B1G had the greatest number of teams in the top 12. The SEC had six teams in, while the B1G had three. In addition to the two Big 12 teams, Notre Dame was also ranked in the top 12; coming in at number ten.
Noticeably absent from the top 12 was any team from the ACC. The highest ranked team from the ACC was Virginia, who came in at number 14.
Under the current format, the five highest rated conference champions would get an automatic bid. That means the Cavaliers would get in if the CFP began today, despite being outside the top 12.
There were no G6 teams in the top 25 of the rankings. However, the committee selected Memphis as the best team from remaining conferences. The highest rated G6 team will also get an automatic bid into the College Football Playoff.
