MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Harlan Obioha scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds as West Virginia pummeled Wheeling University 80–54 on Sunday afternoon at the Hope Coliseum.

Brenen Lorient added 14 points, and Jayden Forsythe chipped in nine for the Mountaineers.

WVU opened the game on a 9–0 run before the Cardinals responded with six straight points to cut the deficit to 9–6 with 14:58 left in the first half.

Once the Mountaineers settled in, they began to pull away. Honor Huff and Treyson Eaglestaff each hit 3-pointers to give WVU a 41–21 lead at halftime.

Wheeling started the second half on a 7–2 run before the Mountaineers regained control. Forsythe knocked down back-to-back 3s to extend WVU’s lead to 75–45 with 3:20 remaining.

Huff and Eaglestaff combined to go 3-of-14 from beyond the arc.

“I’m sure everybody has heard by now we made 20 3s in our closed-door scrimmage,” Mountaineer coach Ross Hodge said. “You’re not always going to do that, and we had good looks. As a matter of fact, I think Honor may have used all of his bullets in the 3-point contest the other night at Ballin’ at Woodburn, but he had good looks and Trey had good looks, and those will go in more often than they did tonight.”

Ayden Goll and Kris English each scored nine points to lead the Cardinals.

WVU shot 51 percent from the field, 30 percent from 3-point range, and made 18 of 28 from the free-throw line. Wheeling shot 33 percent from the floor and 38 percent from deep.

The Mountaineers open the regular season at home on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. against Mount St. Mary’s.
