Breaking Down the Incoming WVU Baseball Freshman Class

By: James Gravley | WV Sports Chat

Baseball season isn’t anywhere near us, but it’s never too early to talk about the upcoming freshman class for the WVU baseball program.

Steve Sabins in his first year as the head coach of the Mountaineers led the team to a 44-16 overall record and 19-9 Big 12 record which was good enough for the Mountaineers to take the Big 12 regular season championship.

WVU went 17-7 at home and 24-7 on the road and on neutral sites went 3-2.

For the second consecutive season WVU made a regional, swept the regional, advanced to the Super Regional where they were swept by the LSU Tigers.

Several of those guys who were on last years roster will return to WVU and they will welcome in several freshman along the way, and in part, thanks to Sabins and his staff’s relentless efforts on the recruiting trail, walked away with a Top-20 recruiting class entering this season.

West Virginia’s 2025 class ranks No. 16 in the country and No. 3 in the Big 12, according to Perfect Game.

Dominican Republic infielder Zahir Barjam and infielder and infielder/right-handed pitcher David Perez are rated as two prospects inside the Top-200. Barjam ranks in at No. 154 while Perez ranks in at No. 167.

Ben Goodacre, a pitcher and an outfielder is rated at No. 18. While Colton Sims, a middle infielder is rated at No. 26.

Rounding out the Top 40 is Keegan Russell, a pitcher and first baseman is rated at No. 35.

The next highest rated player for WVU is southpaw, first baseman and outfielder Wyatt Mosley who is rated at No. 52.

You then have to search 20 spots below that to find the next highly-rated player.

That would be right-hander and outfielder Brayden Robinson who is rated at No. 72.

Hudson Cavallo, a pitcher and an outfield is rated at No. 81.

Sean Goldy, who is an infielder and outfielder is rated at No. 97.

From rankings 111 to where the rankings round out at 132, West Virginia has six more players ranked highly within the Perfect Game rankings.

That is a total of 15 players ranked inside the top 132 within the Big 12 with that full list here. That is a true testament of how Steve Sabins and his staff have managed and recruited well over the last couple of seasons.
