Former WVU LB Trey Lathan Says WVU is “Just Another Team to Get By” on Saturday

It won’t be a homecoming game for former Mountaineer linebacker Trey Lathan suits up for the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday against WVU.

In fact, it’s business as usual for the KU linebacker.

Lathan, who transferred to the Jayhawks during the offseason from West Virginia, leads KU in tackles which should not shock anyone familiar with his game.

He was a stellar defensive player for the Mountaineers in which he had 112 total tackles with 51 of those being solo tackles, 40 of which came last season for WVU.

In his second season for WVU (2023) Lathan had 11 solo tackles and 27 total tackles. He’s already at 11 solo tackles and 25 total tackles for KU this season through three games played. So to say he’s adjusted well to a new defensive system is an understatement.

However, this is just another game on the schedule for KU and Lathan.

“They’re just another team on our schedule that we’ve got to get by,” Lathan said about facing WVU on Saturday.

The key to this game offensively for WVU is slowing down Lathan from getting his feet under him and pressuring Nicco Marchiol and whoever else lines up under center. If WVU can somehow manage to keep Lathan out of the backfield and keep him out of most tackling situations, then it could be a good day for the WVU offense. If they don’t, then it will be a long day for the WVU offense.
