West Virginia’s 17-10 loss to Ohio University was a sobering reminder of the challenges facing the Mountaineers’ offense as they navigate a season filled with high expectations.
The defeat, which came on the heels of a dominant performance in the season opener last week against Robert Morris, exposed critical weaknesses that could define the team’s trajectory moving forward.
Here are three key offensive takeaways from the game.
Jahiem White’s Injury: A Major Blow to the Running Game
One of the most significant factors in WVU’s offensive struggles was the early exit of running back Jahiem White due to a lower-body injury. White, who had been a critical component of the Mountaineers’ rushing attack, leading the team with 93 yards and two touchdowns in the season opener, was sidelined during the first half against Ohio.
His absence was felt immediately, as the team’s ability to establish a ground game diminished significantly. Before his exit, White was responsible for the teams lone touchdown, a 32-yard run in the first quarter.
Offensive Line Struggles: Protection and Push Both Lacking
Another critical area of concern was the performance of WVU’s offensive line, which struggled to provide adequate protection for the quarterback and create running lanes for the backfield.
The line’s inability to hold up against Ohio’s defensive front was evident throughout the game, as the Mountaineers were sacked four times and faced consistent pressure that disrupted their offensive flow.
The lack of push up front was particularly damaging to the running game, as Ohio’s defensive line effectively neutralized WVU’s attempts to establish a ground attack.
Quarterback Position in Flux: Uncertainty and Ineffectiveness
Perhaps the most glaring issue for WVU’s offense was the uncertainty and ineffectiveness at the quarterback position. The game saw a rotation between Nicco Marchiol and Jaylen Henderson, a move that Rodriguez later admitted was an attempt to “get a spark.”
However, neither quarterback could provide the consistency needed to mount a comeback, and the offense remained stagnant for much of the game.
