West Virginia quarterback Nicco Marchiol has made an immediate impact, earning a well-deserved spot on Pro Football Focus (PFF)’s list of the highest-graded quarterbacks from Week 1.
With a 93.6 grade, Marchiol ranks fourth among the nation’s top signal-callers, joining a group that includes California’s Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele (95.1), Arkansas’ Taylen Green (94.1), and Duke’s Darian Mensah (94.0).
Marchiol, a junior, was nearly flawless in West Virginia’s season opener against Robert Morris, completing 17 of his 20 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown with zero interceptions. He also ran for 56 yards and a touchdown.
Marchiol’s 93.6 PFF grade is more than just a statistic—it’s a statement. The Mountaineers’ quarterback competition has been a focal point throughout the offseason, with Coach Rich Rodriguez delaying the announcement of a starter until just before the opener.
He’s been locked in a heated battle for the starting quarterback position against teammates Jaylen Henderson and Scotty Fox Jr., who also impressed this past Saturday.
After his impressive week one performance, Marchiol will continue being the starter for the Mountaineers’ upcoming road game against the Ohio Bobcats on Saturday.
