Morgantown, W.Va. – The West Virginia Mountaineers are set to open their 2025 football season on Saturday at Milan Puskar Stadium against the Robert Morris Colonials, marking the return of head coach Rich Rodriguez to the sidelines.
Here are three bold predictions for what could unfold in this season opener.
1. Jahiem White Eclipses 200 Rushing Yards and Scores Three Touchdowns
I’ll admit, this could be difficult, but I said we’re making bold predictions, so here goes.
White is expected to be the centerpiece of Rodriguez’s run-heavy offensive scheme, and this game could be his breakout moment. Described as a perfect fit for Rodriguez’s system, White’s electrifying speed and agility make him a nightmare for opposing defenses. Against an overmatched Robert Morris team, which has gone 0-6 against FBS opponents, White could feast.
White will carry the ball 20+ times, racking up over 200 rushing yards and finding the end zone three times. The Mountaineers’ offensive line, bolstered by transfers, will open massive lanes, allowing White to showcase why he’s projected to be among the Big 12’s top rushers by season’s end.
2. Nicco Marchiol Throws for 250 Yards and Two Touchdowns in a Breakout Performance
The quarterback battle remains unresolved, with Nicco Marchiol and Jaylen Henderson vying for the starting role and Rich Rodriguez hinting all five quarterbacks could play on Saturday. However, Marchiol is the slight favorite to take the first snap, and this game could be his chance to cement his place as QB1. Rodriguez’s offense, while run-first, isn’t afraid to air it out when playmakers are available, and Marchiol’s dual-threat ability fits the mold.
Marchiol will throw for 250 yards and two touchdowns, spreading the ball to a variety of receivers. This should be the perfect opportunity to building momentum heading into tougher matchups like the Backyard Brawl.
3. WVU’s Defense, Under Zac Alley, Records a Shutout
New Defensive coordinator Zac Alley, one of the brightest young minds in college football, has rebuilt WVU’s defense with a mix of experienced transfers and returning talent. Despite having game-one concerns over implementing an entire new defensive scheme, Alley’s defense should overwhelm Robert Morris’ offense. The Colonials struggled to score against stronger competition in recent years, and WVU’s perfect 22-0 record against FCS opponents bodes well for a dominant defensive showing.
The Mountaineers’ defense will pitch a shutout, holding Robert Morris to under 150 total yards. Expect multiple sacks from a revamped defensive line, even without Jimmori Robinson, and at least one turnover forced by Alley’s opportunistic unit.
