MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – On Wednesday, 247 Sports released their annual talent composite for all FBS college football teams. West Virginia came in at number 63 nationally and 11th in the Big 12 Conference. They have an average player rating of 86.01, ten four-star players and 59 3-star players.

This is a drop from where they were in last year’s national ranking, when they came in at number 54. Prior to last season, they had only nine four-star players, but they had 64 three-stars. Their average player rating in 2024 was 86.44.

However, when comparing the Mountaineers to their Big 12 rivals, they only fell one spot from last year.

Notable teams ranked higher than WVU in this year’s composite are: Pitt (56), Virginia Tech (40), Louisville (50), USF (61), Oregon State (60), Virginia (62).

The Big 12 teams below West Virginia are: Houston (66), Arizona (67), BYU (70), Iowa State (71) Cincinnati (73).

Per 247 Sports:

The Team Talent Composite has been a strong predictor of success in college football. Since its debut in 2015, 9 of 10 national champions have ranked in the top 10, with eight in the top six. The only exception was Michigan, the 2023 champion, which entered the season ranked No. 14.

It’s worth noting that the 247Sports Team Talent Composite has limitations, as it excludes transfer ratings and doesn’t account for players who overperform or underperform their high school rankings. Still, it provides a strong gauge of each team’s roster talent and potential for success.
