West Virginia Women’s Soccer Opens Season with Tough Bout against No. 15 Virginia

The West Virginia Mountaineers women’s soccer team is through with its exhibitions games and now prepares for a common foe and a tough opponent in the Virginia Cavaliers.

Per the WVU athletics site the Mountaineers will be hosting a Back-to-School Drive during Thursday’s match against UVA. Fans will be given a raffle ticket to win a signed, game-worn WVU women’s soccer jersey for every three items donated. The winner of the raffle will be announced at halftime on Thursday.

Nikki Izzo-Brown is entering her 30th season at the helm for the Mountaineers, the only women’s soccer coach in WVU history, with an impressive 402-143-76 overall record.

However, her Mountaineer-led teams are 4-13-3 against the Cavaliers and have lost its last two meetings against the Cavs’ with the most recent game dating back to 2013 when the Mountaineers lost, 2-1.

Sixteen of the 30 different Mountaineers who earned playing time last season return to the team. Also to note six players return to the team who logged 1,000 minutes or more in 2024.

The Big 12 released its coaching poll which West Virginia was picked to finish fourth in the 2025 Big 12 Preseason Poll.

Last season the Lady Mountaineers finished 12-5-3, losing in the Big 12 tournament to Kansas in two overtime’s and lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Kentucky in penalty kicks. 

Thursday nights contest with kickoff at 7:00 pm and will be streamed on ESPN+.
