As it was reported earlier this morning by Schuyler Callihan of West Virginia on SI, transfer running back Jaylan Knighton is no longer on the roster for the Mountaineers.
Several causes of speculation arose this morning from fans wondering why and what could have happened, some pointing blame to the NCAA. However, Rich Rodriguez laid all the rumors and blame to bed.
“He has an academic issue with one class, and it does not look like he’s going to be eligible, which is a shame because he was working hard. Don’t expect to have him. We really liked him. I thought he was a good player, and it was just that one issue came up, which is kind of a little bit of a surprise to everybody. He won’t be playing this year.”
WV Sports Chat’s own Jonathan Martin broke it all down in his most recent story of what it meant for Knighton to no longer be on the WVU roster, along with the depleted running back room.
Prior to joining WVU this offseason as a transfer, Knighton played three seasons at Miami and then an other two at SMU.
He suffered a knee injury in week two last for the Mustangs.
Knighton, in his career has rushed for 1,981 yards and 17 touchdowns..
The running back room now looks like this with six backs on the roster. Jahiem White, Diore Hubbard, Tye Edwards, Cyncir Bowers, Kannon Katzer, and Clay Ash.
However, through technicality, WVU only five running backs on the roster as Edwards is now appealing his eligibility through a court battle.
