Opening Statement

“I forget which practice it is today, but we were in shorts. You can get a lot done in shorts but it’s still, you probably don’t get as good of an evaluation from a physical standpoint. But I thought we did some decent things and got a lot of work in. Tomorrow we’ll go back to full pads and get a little more live, Friday we’ll be back in shorts and Saturday will predominately a scrimmage. There will be some individual work, and special teams work but it’ll most be just a scrimmage and have a full officiating crew and let them play and that’ll get a lot of evaluating done then.”

Thoughts on wide receiver Cam Vaughn, who transferred from Jacksonville State

“Cam is an athletic guy, played high school quarterback. Had a pretty good year for us last year and still hasn’t come close to reaching his ceiling. One of the fastest guys we’ve got, and he can take hard coaching.”

On how much he needs to see from all of the players before he starts narrowing it down

“The reality is I hope we don’t have to narrow it down, as crazy as that sounds. We’re hoping over the next two weeks we don’t only have 15 guys we can win with, hopefully it’s more than that.”

How has it been working five quarterbacks

“Rhett is managing that. They’re getting a lot of reps. And that’s not the only reason we’re going to go live with the quarterbacks some starting tomorrow, but that’s in our mindset. We have to be able to see. It’s a really good group. I think each one of them has gotten better each day.”

What is the number one thing he wants to see when the QB’s go live tomorrow

“Just running the offense. Everybody says making a play but sometimes you’re in there and there’s a busted play or assignment. The quarterback didn’t do anything wrong. We put all of that into factor when looking at them. Sometimes when you go live their ability shows up even more, so that’s one reason why we’re doing it.”

On how big Noel Devine has been helping to coach the running backs

“He’s got a great personality. Noel is always excited to be out there. He’s a natural football coach. I can see it in recruiting, his personality in talking to guys that we recruited. He’s going to have a great career in coaching.”

On how he decides the best position for guys who can play multiple positions

“Nowadays, I wouldn’t hesitate to play a guy both ways if he could do it, but you hope you don’t have to. But you just try and get the best athlete you can, and I think it’s fair to ask which position they want to play.”

On his relationship with former West Virginia head football coach Don Nehlen

“Obviously, I played for coach when this place was first built. We’ve kept in touch a little bit. It’s great to see him. He’s obviously a legend here and did a lot of things for our program.”
