The West Virginia football team welcomed a special guest to practice on Tuesday.
Legendary West Virginia University football coach Don Nehlen made a heartfelt return to the sidelines. At 89 years old, the Hall of Fame coach who led the Mountaineers for 21 years (1980–2000) stepped back onto the turf, greeted by players, staff, and his former protégé, current head coach Rich Rodriguez.
Don Nehlen’s tenure as head coach of the West Virginia Mountaineers from 1980 to 2000 is etched in the program’s history. With a record of 149-93-4, Nehlen led the team to nine bowl games, including a memorable appearance in the 1988 National Championship game against Notre Dame.
