The 2025 MLB Draft proved to be a significant moment for the West Virginia University baseball program, as several Mountaineers heard their names called.
Logan Sauve – Oakland Athletics, 7th Round (200th overall)
Catcher Logan Sauve was the first Mountaineer selected in the 2025 MLB Draft, picked by the Oakland Athletics in the 12th round. Sauve, ranked among the top 300 prospects by Baseball America, was a cornerstone of the WVU lineup hitting .276 with eight home runs, 12 doubles, and 36 RBI.
His ability to handle a pitching staff and control the game from the catcher position made him an attractive pick for the Athletics, who value backstops with strong game-calling skills and leadership. Sauve’s selection marks another milestone for WVU catchers, following in the footsteps of players like Ivan Gonzalez, who signed as an undrafted free agent in 2019.
Kyle West – New York Yankees, 13th Round (404th overall)
West was selected by the New York Yankees in the 13th round, bringing his powerful bat to one of baseball’s most storied franchises. West’s offensive production, including his ability to hit for both average and power, stood out during his time at WVU.
The Hedgesville, W.Va. native spent two seasons with the Mountaineers. This past season West hit .260 with 14 homers and 43 RBI. He was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team.
Robby Porco – Los Angeles Dodgers, 13th Round (405th overall)
Right-handed pitcher Robby Porco was picked by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 13th round, adding another talented arm to their pipeline. Porco, known for his electric fastball and developing secondary pitches, impressed scouts with his mound presence and ability to miss bats.
This past season Porco made four starts and eight appearances out of the bullpen and recorded an 4.64 ERA. He threw 21.1 innings, striking out 24 batters.
Griffin Kirn – Oakland Athletics, 14th Round (410th overall)
Left-handed pitcher Griffin Kirn joined teammate Logan Sauve in the Oakland Athletics organization, selected in the 14th round. Kirn’s versatility as a pitcher, capable of starting or relieving, combined with his ability to generate strikeouts, made him a valuable pick.
Kirn spent just one season in Morgantown. He started a total of 17 games throwing a total of 99 innings, with a 3.36 ERA. He struck out 103 batters on the year and finished the season with a 5-3 record.
Skylar King – Boston Red Sox, 15th Round (448th overall)
Outfielder Skylar King rounded out WVU’s draft class, selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 15th round. King’s athleticism and speed in the outfield, paired with his ability to make consistent contact at the plate, made him an intriguing prospect.
King finished last season with a .291 batting average, while starting 59 games. He recorded 32 RBI while also stealing 13 bases.
King has one season of eligibility remaining and could choose to return to West Virginia.
