We are almost at the point for college football to return and that is bringing up questions about who will be the man under center for the West Virginia Mountaineers when they kick off their season against Robert Morris.
For me, it’s not a matter of who will be the starter, or who will the job, but it’s a matter of who will be used more throughout the season.
I believe Nicco Marchiol will, if you even want to call it this, wins the job.
Marchiol has played in 19 career games, starting three, and has completed 71 of 122 passes (58 completion %) for 742 yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions.
As for the backup plan Rich Rodriguez has a guy in Jaylen Henderson.
Henderson comes in from Texas A&M. And has the most starts under center than any other quarterback on the West Virginia roster with four.
He also has experience at Fresno State, but never recorded any major stats with the team.
Henderson on his collegiate career has six touchdowns with two interceptions with 764 passing yards.
While Max Brown, who transferred in from Charlotte, has experience under center and Scotty Fox, who enrolled this January has impressed in camp, don’t expect either of these two to be a conversation piece when it comes to the quarterback competition up to kickoff on August 30.
For me, I believe Marchiol will be the guy who leads the offense down the field, but if it seems as if the offense is stalling out inside the red zone then Henderson, who is known for being a dual threat quarterback will be called upon to help finish the job.
Rodriguez had said since he took the job, he wants a quarterback who not only will lead on and off the field, but can win games. And at the end of the day that’s what matters the most.
We likely won’t know who is the starting guy until an hour before kickoff against RMU.
