With the recent news of St. Louis Cardinals top-rated prospect JJ Wetherholt earning a promotion to Triple-A after his multi-home run game on Sunday, the news now that fans of Wetherholt and the Cardinals are anticipating is when he will make his Major League Debut with the Cardinals.
It doesn’t appear that the Cardinals will rush Wetherholt’s big league debut, as he is still on pace to reach the majors by next summer.
Wetherholt was also selected as a member of the NL Futures Game with 17 Top 100 prospects set to compete on July 12 at Truist Park in Atlanta.
One former Mountaineer is already on the Cardinals big league roster and that is Victor Scott II.
The Cardinals selected Scott II with their fifth-round, 157th overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft and he made his Major League Debut with the club on March 28, 2024, making the Opening Day roster after an impressive spring.
In his last six games for the Cardinals, Scott II has appeared in 23 at-bats with a home run and two RBIs. On the season he has four home runs with 28 RBIs with a batting average of .238.
Here’s the interesting part; Wetherholt may be used some in center field for the Cardinals not only in the majors, but at Triple-A. If he gets promoted to the big league club this season or even next season, where would that put Scott II?
Some Cardinals bloggers feel as if Scott II doesn’t turn it around in the next couple of months he could either be sent down to the minors or be traded away completely, both options would then open a spot on the main roster for Wetherholt.
Prediction: Wetherholt finishes the 2025 season in the minors, but makes his Big League Debut next summer before July 12, 2026.
