JJ Wetherholt has been on a tear this season for Double-A Springfield and is now coming off of his first multi-home run game in his pro career.
On Sunday, Wetherholt hit a two-run shot to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead in the first inning and then followed that up in the eighth inning with a solo shot.
It was home runs six and seven on the season for Wetherholt. He now has nine home runs in his professional career.
Wetherholt was also selected as a member of the NL Futures Game with 17 Top 100 prospects set to compete on July 12 at Truist Park in Atlanta.
Wetherholt is considered the Cardinals’ No. 1 prospect according to MLB Pipeline and is rated the 16th best prospect in baseball according to MLB.com.
According to a source, Wetherholt could get promoted to Triple-A Memphis after the All-Star weekend, but noted that the Cardinals don’t usually rush moving their prospects up the ranks. Also, Wetherholt, a solid infielder could see some time in the outfield, promptly at center field to just help his stock within the organization.
Wetherholt’s estimated time of arrival (ETA) to the MLB roster is summer of 2026. He is on current pace with that move as well. If he earns the promotion to Triple-A this season, it will likely come right at the July 31 trade deadline or sometime right before.
