WVU Football Adds UNC TE Ryan Ward From Transfer Portal

by: Brandon Walker

WVU football landed another player from the transfer portal on Wednesday. North Carolina tight end Ryan Ward committed to WVU, confirmed on his social media account.

Ward (6-foot-3, 254 pounds) was a star recruit from East Rutherford, New Jersey. He received three-time all-county, two-time all-county, and one-time all-state honors during his high school years.

Ward recorded 85 receptions for 1,823 yards and 27 touchdowns at East Rutherford High School.

As an early enrollee, Ward played in nine games as a freshman in 2024 at North Carolina. He entered the transfer portal following spring practice on April 25. Ward has three years of eligibility remaining.

Ward gives head coach Rich Rodriguez an option with a high ceiling and has yet to reach his potential at the college level. He is now one of six tight ends on scholarship. However, three of those are in their final season of eligibility.

With the addition of Ward and Northern Illinois transfer Grayson Barnes, the Mountaineers now have filled the needs of the position room.
