UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.–The Penn State baseball team upset No.17 West Virginia 3-2 on Tuesday evening at Medlar Field.
Spencer Barnett and Skylar King led the Mountaineers (34-5, 13-4 Big 12) with two hits apiece.
Benjamin Hudson (2-1) suffered the loss. He pitched 2.2 innings and surrendered one run on four hits while fanning four.
Mason Butash (4-1) picked up the win for the Nittany Lions (25-14, 13-9 Big Ten). He tossed 4.2 scoreless frames.
WVU ended a 14-game winning streak with the loss.
In the bottom of the first, Jack Porter homered to right center field to give Penn State a 1-0 lead.
Then the Nittany Lions picked up two unearned runs in the fifth inning after a costly fielding error by Brodie Kresser.
In the top of the seventh, Barnett blasted a two-run home run to left field to cut the deficit to 3-2. With two outs, Logan Sauve singled through the right side and advanced to second on a wild pitch. However, Kyle West went down on strikes to end the inning.
The Mountaineers went down in order in the eighth. Grant Hussey led off the ninth with a walk but Chase Renner retired the final three batters to end the game.
WVU travels to Florida on Friday for a three-game series against UCF.
