MORGANTOWN, W.Va.– Grant Hussey’s three-run bomb in the first helped West Virginia defeat James Madison 11-1 on Tuesday night at the Kendrick Family Ballpark.

The Mountaineers (17-1) took a commanding 8-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back.

Sam White led WVU with two hits and Hussey led the Mountaineers with three RBI. Chase Swain drove in two runs.

The Dukes (7-13) scored one run on three hits.

With the bases loaded in the first, Gavin Kelly was struck by a pitch before Skylar King walked in another run. Then Chase Swain’s base hit up the middle tacked on two more runs. King scored on a fielding error before Hussey’s three-run blast gave WVU an 8-0 lead.

James Madison got a run back in the third but the Mountaineers would add on an additional run in the sixth, seventh and eighth to put away the game.

Hussey’s 40th-career homer, which is the most in program history.

Righthander Mac Stiffler made his second start and allowed just one earned run in three innings of work. He surrendered one hit, walked four batters and struck out three Dukes.

Benjamin Hudson threw a pair of scoreless innings of relief for WVU. Robby Porco, Ben McDougal and Luke Lyman each tossed a scoreless inning.

The two teams face off on again on Wednesday night. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m.
