MORGANTOWN, W.Va.–West Virginia out slugged Kennesaw State 14-7 on Sunday afternoon at Kendrick Family Ballpark to take the weekend series.
After being struck in the face by a baseball on Saturday afternoon, Brodie Kresser returned to the lineup and had three hits and four RBI while scoring three runs for the Mountaineers (14-1). Sam White had two hits and three RBI.
Tyler Hutson (1-0) earned the win for WVU while Ryan Gold (0-1) suffered the loss.
The Owls scored seven runs on 10 hits and fell to 6-11 on the season.
Kennesaw State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning but the lead wouldn’t last long. In the bottom of the inning, the Mountaineers went to work and White’s home run tied the game. Kelly gave WVU a 4-3 lead when he tripled to right field, plating Jace Rinehart.
Chase Swain’s sacrifice fly extended the Mountaineers’ lead to 5-3 in the third inning but the Owls would get a run back in the top of the fifth.
In the bottom of the fourth, WVU tacked on four more runs to take a 9-4 lead.
Wesley Alig’s solo shot to left field cut the deficit to 9-5 in the seventh.
In the eighth, Kelly stole home and Swain’s single through the left side drove in Skylar King. Then Kresser’s three-run home run pushed the Mountaineers lead to 14-6.
WVU’s next game is against Towson on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Kendrick Family Ballpark.
